As a response to a question posed on the VA forums, I wrote a little thing on friendship that I wanted to share.
The thread can be found here
Girls often travel in packs, sometimes a hive actually, it's like a Queen and her minions at some times. You see this quite often, mostly in high school and colleges, women usually outgrow this, well HV women do.
How ever, true friendship is also a very strong bond, and this could very well be the case here. It's a lot like love.
You pose a question about the difference between a friend, and a best friend. I think this is one of those questions that can not be answered with logic, but with feelings.
I for one, have a close group of best friends. We have all known each other for the same amount of time, as we came together from a common interest when we were teenagers. Today, I can not imagine my life without these friends. They are a part of my life, as of my family, as I am a part of their lives.
When I see these friends, I do not have to worry about deceit, powerplay or any ill thoughts, because I know they would never hurt me intentionally. When they have a hard time, I am there to help them through it, and they do the same for me.
This is the definition of a best friend in my life, in fact I go a step further and say that I love my best friends. I think it all comes down to that feeling. You may know it as 'pair bonding' in pickup, it doesn't have to be between a man or a woman, or gay either, it can just be friendship.
I think Ralph Waldo Emerson put it best, "A friend may well be reckoned the masterpiece of nature"
What Emerson speaks of there, is true friendship, best friends. But there is another level, the friends you mentioned she has had for over 10 years. Does she love them too?
Maybe, or perhaps she just cares for them. But there are levels of love and care, we know this and accept it.
Yes I have other friends then this select group, friends that I grew up with, that have always been there for me, and will continue to be there for me. But I don't love them as much, or I don't care as much about them as my closest friends.
I don't think you can really put logic to friendship or love, or relationships in general. But I hope you can relate to what I've written.
